Christmas Prep Continues ... Part 34

So I don't know if you know but quite a big day is coming up - and it's a little day us folk like to call Christmas Day.

Which means: lots and lots of prep. There's the christmas party, the shopping for gifts, the buying of the tree, the dying of the hair for Christmas, the buying of stocking fillers, the buying of the turkey..........

It literally goes on forever doesn't it? I don't know about you but I definitely think that the prep is the best part about the big day. Testing your food to make sure you have the best possible recipe and the age-old question of what the hell you are going to wear to the Christmas party.

Well tonight that is the exact dilemma I am having. I am sat here literally clueless:

Oh the stress, oh the stress. Agggh.

Deep. Breath.

So I have come away from my ridiculous closet and have concluded one thing: I have nothing to wear. I am dying here. So tomorrow I am heading to get my nails done and I absolutely will get this problem solved before. I will not come away empty handed. Please let me find something fabulous.

On another Christmas prep note, tonight I have been trying out my spuds for the 25th. I have tried all kinds of recipes - different boiling times, different oils - you name it I have tried it. But I think I have now perfected the perfect roaster. What do you think?

All together now....Jingle bells, jingle bells.

Night night, and I hope the snow isn't causing too much of a problem - wherever you are.

It's Well and Truly Christmas Time

Santa Clause is coming to town...

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer...

You better watch out, you better not cry...

Sorry but I am just so in the mood. I have spent late afternoon today finishing off my delicious Christmas cakes. They look completely amazing - if I do say so myself.

Hell yes, I did make about 20 more - but you get the picture.

Absolutely everything is edible and my family just cannot wait to tuck in on the big day.

Night night all and dare I say it?!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

National Curry Week

So this week is national curry week. Any excuse for a good old curry right?

So in order to end the week in true Indian fashion the family are delving into a currylicious dinner. Straight from our local Indian.

We have ordered the following:

Vegetable Madras
Pilau Rice (and lots of it)
Chicken Sag
Sag Bhaji
Popadoms (til they're coming out our ears)

Doesn't it just look delicious? Well the opinions are rather split in our house - a few lovers and a few absolute haters. For me, it's the hotter the better. I literally love the fire-feeling. What's a curry without the heat? To all you chicken korma eaters - oh shame on you! Cream is for desserts - not Indian.

So enjoy the X Factor (I know you're all watching it) and the end of national curry week.

Night night and keep warm folk.

Seduced by Julie and Julia

'Julia Child began learning to cook when she was thirty-seven years
old.  She started because she wanted to feed her husband Paul.  She
started because though she’d fallen in love with great food late, when
she did she’d fallen hard.  She started because she was in Paris.  She
started because she didn’t know what else to do.'
(Taken from Official Julie/Julia Blog)

Just the other night the movie Julie and Julia was on Sky. Without even thinking about it I decided to record it to watch at another time. I kept putting it off but yesterday when the temperature seemed to hit -12 I made a cup of tea  and snuggled down to watch it.

At first I just thought it would be a well-acted (It did star Meryl) and slightly funny take on a true story. Well by the end, I was completely smitten - with the idea, with the blog, with the cooking and with the whole project in general.

Julie, a 30 year old woman sets herself a project to make every one of Child's recipes from her incredibly famous book 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking.'

The story is truly inspirational and a little sad at times. Documenting all of her trimuphs and lows in a blog: The Julie/Julia project, millions upon millions of people went on daily to see how she was getting on.

The film ended and I just felt inspired. Now, Julie and Julia never actually met (can't help but feel disatisfied at that) but Julie felt like she knew her.

Well of course I was seduced by the film and bought the book. It was dispatched this morning and I cannot wait to see all of the wonderful recipes.

I will test them out and let you know how I get on. In the mean time, watch the film. It's not a masterpiece but you do feel good at the end.

Food on the Face

Now I don't know if you have realised, but I'm quite partial to food. Yes, yes I know, no great shocker there. And beauty products? Well they're one of my loves too.

So when I was recently chatting to a friend, she dropped something in to my mind which I just could not ignore:

Food on the face. Alright, that's not the actual name, but is what I now refer to it as. You know what I mean: beauty products containing food products. You have all heard of the age-old cucumber on the eyes approach or tea-bags to reduce puffiness. Now I have tried the cucumber trick. Soothing and cooling, yes. But beneficial? Well that is doubtful.

So my friend mentioned that it was worth having a look at products from Lush.

Yes, you know the store which literally makes every high-street smell like soap. Whenever I'm in there the only thing I can every think about is: 'how on earth do people work with this smell?' Well thankfully they do, and they also provide us with food-based products for every skin, hair and body need too.

So pop up the heating, have a bath, create my perfect hot chololate from bonfire night and have a go with some of my favourites:

Cupcake Fresh Face Mask:

No no no, not for eating. But cupcake in a jar? Now that sounds good. This one is perfect for a deep, deep cleanse to really clear out those pores and remove all of those impurities.

The Sacred Truth:

This energising mask is perfect for tired, wintered skin. And lets be honst who doesn't have that right now? This one contains ginseng and green tea. Wonderfully weird!

Trichomania Shampoo:

This solid shampoo is great on dry hair. Known to condition 'parched hair' it is the remedy for split ends and heat-treated locks.

Now, I did promise you glamorous food - and I keep m promises!

Till tomorrow.

Winter Hair = Disaster

When it comes to Winter, you park up your little car in the nearest spot to your work party and venture to find your destination. What does this mean? It means chapped lips by January, dry skin, but worst of all? Frizzy and dry hair!

Ultimate disaster, dont you agree? You know it just sucks. Due to my half Italian background I have been graced with the gene of curly/dry hair. Constantly trying to tame it is literally an ongoing battle I have with myself everyday.

I have tried every product out there. You name it, I have it. My cute little bedroom is stocked full with products after products for dry/damaged hair, heat-treated hair (yes, my straighteners are literally my best friend).

So recently I was scouring around on the internet and came across Moroccanoil. What's this I hear you say? Have you been living in a hole? I reply.

Marocconoil is the latest on-trend treatment for all your hair needs.

Their original oil treatment as shown above should be used on wet, washed hair - before blow drying. You will literally be stunned at the results. Say hello to smooth, straight, soft hair. Trust me, I am not lying to you - would I dare?

Next up and worth your attention is their intense hydrating treatment mask - this little beauty should be used around once a week/fortnight in order to restore your dried-up locks.

Is there really anything better than having gorgeous soft locks, ala Blake Lively?

(*Green with envy*)

So get yourself along to a stockist or purchase a few little bottles on the internet. I will warn you, it does not come cheap.

So wack those products in your hair and whip up your little surprises for christmas such as my Tomato Ketchup which is coming soon. All homemade with extra Christmas spices for added zazz.

Till next time.

Crispy and Delicious

I remember quite a while ago popping along to Jamie's Italian in Bath and enjoying a beautiful Pasta Arrabiata. It was spicy, with deep tomato flavours and a crunchy topping.

Wearing my new grey embellished lace overlay dress from Topshop I couldn't help but think:

(Photo from Topshop)

What on earth was this crunchy topping?

Now I have always prided myself on being able to detect flavours. 'Yes, definitely oregano', 'no doubt there's cinnamon in there.'

But I was quite literally, stumped.

Until today, I was doing my usual scour of the BBC Good Food website and came across their Pesto and Tomato Pasta with Crispy Crumbs.

Finally! My questions answered. It turns out it is a little mix of crumbs, oil, garlic, pine nuts and parmesan.

Delicious. And how cute is that dress?

Night night.

Smile :-) It's Summer on Your Lips

So I know the sun has gone (hear 'hmphs' all around, yes I know, I know) and it is damn cold out there today. Did winter just suddenly slap us in the face this week? I think so.

But today whilst doing a spot of shopping I came across something rather delicious which I just had to get my card out for.

Now usually I'm a red/bright pink kinda lipstick/lipgloss wearer. Never entirely sure whether the more natural tones suit me so I tend to go for the 'HELLO' colours.

But today I bought a little piece of sunshine, to wear on my lips during these cold days.

(Photo from YSl)

YSl's Golden Gloss shimmering lip gloss is a sunny day in a tube. It contains watermelon in order for the glitter to last longer and I'm told that the glitter really does last.

I'm gonna wack it on when I head out tonight. My friends will have a shock at that my usually-red lips are no more, but hey, it's only natural to spice it up every once in a while right?

So when you're heading to Raphael's tonight for their grilled lamb cutlets infused with Moroccan Chermoula paste served with sauteed courgettes, green beans and carrots with tomato Provencal sauce, pop this baby on and shine away.

Mimi Noor

You know the case: you are desperate for those 'perfect' jeans but cannot quite find them. You have trooled every single shop on your local high street and have come home empty handed.

'Perhaps nothing will fit me' you think or;

'Jeans just aren't for me,' perhaps.

Well if you live in the South-West, have a decent car or perhaps a rail-card then fear no more. Mimi Noor, which opened recently on Bath's most famous shopping street: Milsom Street, is here to solve your every jean-need. And last night I went and discovered just that.

Mimi Noor stocks all of those exclusive denim brands which literally fit like perfection: J Brand (I want the houlihan!) and Current/Elliot are just a couple which I know will have you reaching for your card and your keys already.

So last night we all met on Milsom Street for Mimi's launch party. The prosecco was flowing and the canapes were a delight, whilst we twisted and squeezed between all of the people writing down their 'wish-lists' for their husbands at Christmas.

I reached for my handbag to snap a photo of the canapes and general atmosphere to discover I had left my camera on my dressing table. Typical! But take my word for it.

So get your little ass along to Mimi Noor, on Milsom Street Bath. Aswell as all of that fabulous denim you can also find some fab casual wear - to go perfectly with those new jeans. Including oh-so-fabulous shirts and cashmere cardis.

I'll see you there!

For this Weekend, I Suggest...

For those of you in the Bath area, you will know that it is often quite difficult to choose which restaurant to head to. Fancying a fancy affair? Or a quick run-in, run-out dinner? Then let me show you...

Fancy Affair:

(Photo from: Royal Crescent Hotel)

For those of you who want a lavish and exciting night then head to the Royal Crescent restaurant. It truly is a wonderful expereince. The waiters are not only there to deliver your food - they have a head full of information regarding all courses and are more than willing to recommend from the incredible wine list. When we last visited, one of my friends enjoyed the: Pan Fried Stone Bass, Sauté Langoustine, Confit Frog legs,
Warm Saffron Jelly - which they said was to-die for.

Intimate Affair:

(Photo from: Casanis)

Have you finally convinced your partner to take you out for a fancy dinner? Well first of all, bravo and secondly, pick up your phone and call Casanis. This Bath based French bistro is only small but perfectly delightful. You will have to reserve as it is very popular amongst the Bath locals. Trust me, you will not regret booking this one.
Quick but Good:

(Photo from: Bath Restaurants)

Hudson's Bar and Grill is New York Chic in Bath. They are known for their 'best steaks in town' and if you ask my family, they couldn't agree more. Now, I'm not saying the steak is cheap - but worth pulling out the purse for. I would also recommend booking up for this one.

So, have you decided what you fancy? They are all fabulous, why else would I recommend them? On another note, for the evening why dont you try Chanel's Smoky Eyes Simplified:

(Photo from Chanel)

Yes that's right, it literally contains everything you need to create that perfect 'smoky eye' which never actually turns out the way you intended. Yes, I know you know!

Enjoy!

Dying-From-A-Cold Comfort Food

Now, everybody I seem to know is ill right now. During my morning commute you could literally sing along to the tune of the sneezes/coughs/snizzles.

Are you ill too? I'm sure you are right now, I know I definitely am. So I thought I would fill you in on a couple of my too ill to cook but fancy something to eat on treats:

HOT CHOCOLATE WITH MARSHMALLOWS:

This can be beautifully made with simply using Cadbury's Dairy Chocolate Spread, mix it in with hot milk and alas, hot chocolate. Top with squirty cream and obviously marshmallows!

MY PREVIOULSY MENTIONED BRIOCHE DOUGHNUTS:

Check back. Then roll up on the sofa and sip something warm. Off to pass out on the sofa - you do the same.

'Can I Have an Emma Watson Please'

When Emma Watson first cut off her hair I thought - OMFG!

But I wasn't quite sure if that was an OMFG I love it, OMFG, I'm shocked or OMFG why did she do that?

So I settled for the shock. To go from that iconic Harry Potter hair to a crop seemed like a radical decision - perhaps a response to the end of the Harry Potter age?

But after seeing her on the front of Vogue last week and after the Harry Potter premier I was completely and utterly convinced. I asked my Mum to get another woman's verdict and her response was: 'you have to be one beautiful woman to pull off that haircut.'

And could my Mum be any more correct? I have always been a fan of Emma, she is completely beautiful, has an incredible English accent which she carries around the world and there is no denying that she is the best in the Harry Potter films.

But that hair cut? I kow it will soon become a hairdresser hit, 'can I have an Emma Watson please?'

Now just check out the difference:

Wow, somebody has grown up haven't they?

Now have you booked your HP tickets? I know I have, my friends and I are the proud owner of 3 VIP tickets to the first night. Excited doesn't 'cut' it.

Thank You For Making Life So Easy

Now only last week I showed you my miniature Christmas cake recipe. But I'm no fool, I know that not everybody has the time to be creating a Christmas cake from scratch. But don't go and buy one in those gold/red foil packets which you just throw in the microwave on Christmas day.

Instead go for Delia Smith's Classic Christmas Cake Prepared Mix. Have you seen the advert? It is literally heaven in a packet. Delia and Waitrose have joined together and made the impossible - possible.

Delia has put all of the Christmas cake ingredients in one easy peasy packet for just £10. All you have to do is literally throw and mix it together. Wack it in the oven and alas, your cake is ready for Christmas day.

Can you believe it? Even things such as the black treacle are measured out for you.

Pasta's Up!

Tonight I'm whipping up a super-fast pasta bake for dinner. My secret recipe? Fresh capers thinly sliced and scattered through. Friends always say: 'what's that added ingredient?' 'My secret' I tell them, well not anymore - keep it quiet!

So making pasta bake got me to thinking - what is the best pasta for such a pasta bake?

Fusilli?

When it comes to quick grab-a-salad-for-lunch I do enjoy a bit of fusilli. But in a pasta bake? Not so much of a fan.

Penne?

I don't know about you but this is just simply one of the most boring pastas isn't it? I mean, it is just droll. Boring!

Rigatoni?

Hell yes! For some profound reason it's just my favourite - do not ask why I couldn't even explain. Maybe it's the texture? Or the shape? All I know is - it tases great!

Night night.

Pork Crackling

So the pork for tonight's dinner is in the oven:

Which got me to thinking, how is the best way to cook that pork joint? Well, take my advice and follow these steps, they really are simple:

Perfect Crackling:

1. Score your joint, it will have scores already but no harm in creating more!
2. Take a table spoon of sea salt and rub it in. Really try and press it in as much as possible - the more the better!
3. Cook the joint in a pre-heated oven for 35 minutes for every 450g of meat. On 220. And add another 40 minutes and cook on 190.
4. Allow to rest for 30 minutes.
5. Enjoy!

Look What I Found on the Doorstep!

Okay, I didn't really find it on the doorstep, but it did get delivered today:

Can you make out what that is? Can you? Can you? Well for those of you that can't ... it's our Christmas turkey. Despite not eating meat, the rest of my family do and so it is turkey as usual at the dinner table - there really is no convincing them otherwise.

This year we went for the frozen option. Over the years we have tried fresh and we have tried frozen. If they're perfectly honest (I'm afraid I can't judge) they say there is no difference - if anything they say that a frozen is often more tender when cooked very, very slowly.

But instead of the grand turkey that we usually go for this year we have simply opted for a crown. Yes, we know it's not quite the same in terms of presentation but we weighed it up and decided it would just make life easier and would save somebody waking up at the crack of dawn to turn the turkey on.

Next on my Christmas aganda: finding a suitable recipe for our turkey. Any recommendations? I'm thinking maybe stuffed with sausage? Not entirely sure yet. Time to get thinking!

Part II

When I am in London, I just cannot help but visit the pet world in Harrods, who can surely resist a cute toy poodle or french bulldog? Well it turns out, me.

Whilst I was there I was astonished at the newest addition to Harrod's:

Yes that is a beauty therapist - and yes that is a dog. Alas, it is, you've guessed it - a pet spa! I just couldn't believe my eyes. These dogs literally live a better life than me. Treatments include mud baths and facials. Book your pooch in!

Cat having treatment:

When in London:

Paid a little visit to Queenie. Well that's a lie, we drove past in a taxi, super fast. Therefore, this slightly decent photo = miracle.

Don't know if you know but it's Christmas in the capital. Literally all lights are glowing and you find yourself singing 'Santa Clause is coming ... to town' walking around Harrod's Christmas dept. Yes, I really am that Christmas-minded. As for Selfridges, I feel they have upped the Christmas-anti this year:

But the highlight of the day: the joy that is Selfridge's shoe dept. That is one hell of a dept. to be proud of Selfridges, we salute you:

Capital

Today I took a little day-trip to our fine capital. London is just an absolute delight for a day. Run around Knightsbridge, taxi to Covent Garden, taxi to Oxford Street, run to Regent Street, taxi to Paddington - home.

Getting this done in one day is some going but so fun. So here are a a few fashion and food snippets from my day.

My day started in typical First Great Western fashion: delayed trains. Could it start any other way? By the time we got to London the taxi queue was longer than the train itself and the heavens had literally opened.

Next up in traditional 'me' fashion I ran along to Harrod's world famous patisserie counter. The cakes are really are to-die for. Butterscotch eclairs? Oh yes please, one for me!

Continuing with Harrods, I headed to the Harrods Cafe for a little pre-lunch snack. Or shall I say cake?! On the menu was a delightful bannoffee pie and raspberry cheesecake. Raspberry cheesecake it was for me. Fresh raspberries on the top with a perfect white-choc Harrods symbol. delightful.

Check back tomorrow for a little fashion trip to my heaven!

Christmas Cake Extravaganza

Christmas cakes are quite a faf to make, but when they're made = perfection. They are completely worth the effort and although you may feel as though it's quite a chore, when it comes to Christmas lunch and you whip out your cakes (lots of mini ones as opposed to one big one) you will be so pleased  you did.

Ingredients: To Make 12 Mini Xmas Cakes:
1. 500g Raisins.
2. 250g Currants.
3. 125g Glace Cherries.
4. 100g Chopped Walnuts.
5. 300ml Brandy.
6. 225g Butter.
7. 140g Dark Brown Sugar.
8. 1.5 Teaspoons of Grated Lemon Zest.
9. 3 Large Organic Eggs.
10. 1.5 Tablespoons of Black Treacle.
11. 0.5 Teaspoons Almond Essence.
12. 225g Plain Flour.
13. 120g Ground Almonds.
14. 0.25 Teaspoon Ground Cloves.
15. 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon,
16. 0.25 Teaspoon Ground Ginger.
17. 12 Tins (I would advise you buy very small tins, much like the photo below, remove the label and you then have your tins! Make sure you avoid ones with the ridges)

Temperature: 150.

Recipe for Greatness:
1. Pop all the dried fruit into a large saucepan - throw in the brandy. Bring this to the boil, turn off the heat, cover with lid and leave it with the lid on overnight.
2. Ensure the eggs and butter are at room temperature so take them quite a few hours before you begin.
3. Mix the butter and sugar together until nice and creamy! Beat in the lemon zest.
4. Place in the organic eggs - one at a time. Beat well. Then, beat in the treacle and almond.
5. Put the almonds, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and walnuts together. Mix in the overnight mixture, along with the mixture created in step 3. Combine thoroughly then add the pecans.

6. Bring out your washed and dried pea tins! Ensure they are greased and lined. Put into the oven for 30-40 minutes until skewer is clean.
7. Cool and brush with a little brandy to spice it up!
8. Choose a topping of your choice! Prefer it plain? Or try a marzipan topping.
9. Pop a little ribbon around to serve.
10. Enjoy with brandy cream.

Bonfire Night

So it's getting dark. Alright, it's pitch black outside already - but for dramatic effect, you know?

It's bonfire night, don't know if you knew? Which means fireworks are going to be lighting up the sky tonight. I do love fireworks - which last 5 minutes - and then, I'm over them, inside, freezing my toes off and praying for somebody to stick the kettle on.

My clear, winter sky will soon go from this:

To this:

So in order to keep you warm tonight I thought I would pop a few suggestions down for you to keep cosy.

I know it's going to be a quick, turnaround dinner for most tonight as people run in from work, shower, dry hair, put on jeans, warm boots, scarf, gloves, hat - throw dinner down throat and run to the nearest firework display.

For those of you who have a garden and boyfriend/husband willing to light the match it probably means you will be having a little display of your own, right? Which means sparklers, rockets, hot chocolate and marshmallows.

So, if you fancy a quick and easy hot chocolate, try this: Grab around 1mug of full-fat milk, heat it up on the stove, stirring. Pop half a normal size dairy milk bar in and stir till it melts. If not quite choclatey enough, pop in the other half. - it's all down to taste. From there, whip cream = must have.

If you're looking for something to fill you up a little more, grab a banana and mars bar. Slice the banana in half, length-ways. Do not cut the whole way through. Break up the Mars and place it through the banana. Ram a clean stick through it and pop it on top of a small fire. Alas, a delicious midnight treat.

Enjoy the displays!

P.S. For those of you who are lighting bonfires tonight, be sure to check for hedgehogs underneath and only light it from one side so that if you don't see them they are able to escape.

Play safe!

My Little Secret

When it comes to jewellery I am in my element. Bracelets, bangles, necklaces, earrings, but most importantly: rings.

Rings, rings, rings. They are my favourite jewellery, I love wearing clashing rings and stones to accesories an outft - perfectly.

(Photo from www. marieclaire.co.uk)

Take the lovely Fearne Cotton for example. Could her fingers be any better accesorised? I doubt it.

So when it came to a birthday recently, I was delighted to receive a stack of rings from Monica Vinader. Have you checked out her collections? They are absolute perfection and very reasonable for such beautifully created jewellery.

This beautiful Candy Ring is literally to-die-for. I will certainly be buying some more soon to add to my clusters.

South-West Pizza

I know I shouldn't admit it, but I'm quite a pizza fan. Yes, I love all the lavish topings (veggie toppings, of course). At a restaurant, the price to 'add additional topings' is always paramount to me - because I am certain to use it.

How about you, what is your favourite pizza topping? Mine has to be, artichoke hearts.

I guess being a veggie, the options are limited, but artichoke hearts? They are the best.

So this got me thinking, where in the south west of our great country can you get a cracking pizza?

The traditional 'pizza houses' just do not hit the spot for me. You know the ones. I always refer to them as 'American Pizza' - not quite the real thing. I absolute hate thick crust on pizza, that's just not the way they do it in Italy.

I believe if you really want a 'true' pizza then you have to head to proper Italian restaurants - you know, the real 'mccoy'. So off you go on your search and fellow southerners, report back!

Tuesday 2 November 2010

The Perfect Chip

Yes, yes, everybody loves a posh knees-up every now and then. But from most people i speak to, the general consensus is that a good, old-fashioned, well-cooked meal is what really hits the spot.

And what is more homemade, or more delicious than the perfectly roasted ... chip. Yes, I know, not very 'a la carte' but they taste good, fill you up and are great on these dark winter nights (it feels like midnight right now, not nearly 7pm!)

When it comes to chips it is fair to say that pretty much any potato can be used - if you're not fussy. But who isn't fussy? Not many people. So if you are competing in a chip-a-thon or want to make your spuds d-e-licous then check out my 'no nonsense' guide to the perfect, chip.

Trust me, once you've tried this you will never go back to the old out-of-the-freezer-packet. They just don't taste the same, do they? Enjoy and as always - good luck!

Ingredients:
1. 1.5kg of Rooster Spuds.
2. 400ml Olive Oil.
3. Seasoning.

Recipe:
1. Grab a sharp knife and cut into similar, chip-like shapes. Do not make some thick and some thin as you will struggle to find an even cooking time.
2. Rinse off the starch.
3. Bring a large pan of water to the poil, pop the chips in and cook until a knife is easily inserted (but not so that they fall apart and Mash is nearly formed).
4. Bring the chips out of the pan. Do not drain them, bring them out with a spoon - ensure all moisture is gone and pop onto paper towels.
5. Pat them - softly and ensure that no paper towel is left behind.
6. Heat up the oil, slowly.
7. Place the chips on an oven tray and drizzle the now hot oil on them.
8. Season.
9. Place in a pre-heated oven (200), turn once and cook until golden brown.
10. Enjoy with dip!

Now, some people attempt this 'twice cooked' recipe, for me, this isn't really necessary. Enjoy!
